What is therapy like?

Your first session with your therapist will be an introduction of you to your therapist, and your therapist to you. You and your therapist will review what you’ve included in your intake form and discuss what your goals for your sessions might be. It’s okay if finding a goal for your time in therapy is your first goal. There are no wrong answers.
Because everyone’s goals are at least slightly different, your sessions will be tailored to you. Generally speaking, you can expect to talk about your everyday life, your personal history as it connects to your goals and report any progress towards the goals set from your previous sessions.

How long does therapy take?

It is usual to schedule weekly 50-minute sessions. Because everyone is slightly different, you and your therapist will decide what is best for you.
Seeking therapy is recognizing a need for change. Different changes take different amounts of time. Trying your best to practice outside of your sessions what you learn in therapy is the best way to start seeing benefits. Some people stop going to therapy when a short-term goal has been completed. Some people continue on with deeper or different issues. Your goals and participation will dictate how long therapy will be useful to you.

Does what we talk about in therapy remain confidential?

Confidentiality is one of the most important aspects of therapy. You and your therapist will need honest information about you, and your goals, to find the best path to achieving those goals. Your sessions are for your development and will not be disclosed unless you, or your guardian, give prior written authorization or as required by law.

Furthermore, your therapy sessions are considered part of your Personal Health Information, part of your medical record. It is protected by the HIPAA Privacy Rule.
